It's quite possible there was no GnuChess v. 1.0. If an author is not intending
to add other versions, they add no version number to the program. I've seen this
with some other CC programs.

You say you don't want to email John or Stuart because they may both claim
authorship of the first GnuChess "without evidence", and what then?

I believe you're missing the more likely alternative that they will not only
agree on which is the original author (or agree that both co-authored it). Also,
they may each have evidence in the form of the original GnuChess program which
you are seeking, and could email a copy to you.
