You are asking a question that is almost impossible to answer.  Crafty has
the following 'plusses':

(1) probes databases in the search, while most programs probe at the root,
currently (I think Marty probes inside the search in mchess pro...)

(2) no "forward pruning"... I use null-move of course, but I don't throw
out moves without any search at all.

(3) fairly fast with a fairly decent evaluation that understands many parts
of the endgame...

It has the following 'minuses':

(1) not as smart as some programs.

(2) not as fast/deep as some programs.

these are offsetting in ways, so it is a "pay your money and take your
chances.."  :)
