Dr.Pawlak > >I am hoping the chess community starts talking about >this problem. that was my whole point i was hoping that this was going to be the focus of the article of course i realize you did not write the title page of the mag but the title did get me all excited to finally, hopefully read something in print about the cheating issue on the net >I wish I knew what the incidence was. If I had to guess (among rated games >between registered players): thank you for your guesstimates, which of course carry great weight as far as i can tell, i think this is the VERY FIRST time a respected member of the chess community has actually mentioned a cheating incidence statistic from my own personal experience, playing as both a registered player and now soley as a non registered guest(because i got fed up with being cheated in rated games by players without the C DESIGNATION) i would opine that the cheat ratio(number of games i have played in one sitting-night and encountered a player using a computer WITHOUT THE C designation)is roughy 50-60% in plain English..the incidence of cheaters is 50-60% in any given night on any given server sometimes higher..sometimes less(but rarely so) this would hold for Registered players as well as Guests bear in mind that i also consider it cheating when a player utilizes a "Pre-Move" client to makes his/her moves before i do this enables the player to use virtually no clock time when there are mere seconds remaining to meet the time limit if i were to factor in the widespread use of Pre Move clients i would guesstimate an even higher "Cheat Ratio"..perhaps as much as 75% on any given night in addition it should be noted that many players who have been initially screened for computer use when they first register ,could easily use a computer on a random basis from time to time..there is nothing stopping a "clean" player from occasinally using a computer to win ..or even to play most of the game themselves and then use the computer during a crucial moment. i have encountered to all of these cheating tactics all of this adds up to meaningless online ratings due to the distortion of the rating pool i would love to read in PRINT someone of respected standing in the chess community say point blank that online ratings are not statistically valid due to the cheating problem when asked about the cheating problem on the net GM Evans and several other GM'S have made vague statement's that they do not like to play online because they cannot "see" the opponent. a stronger more direct statement is of course not to be expected because they do not wish to burn their bridges which is understandable given the hardships in making a living from chess.
