Instead, it is an issue of whether or not you can be sure that you are playing against a human. If you could be sure of that, then the rest would go away. Right? Incidentally, ratings are useful whether online or otherwise. They provide a way for someone to monitor their performance improvements. They also offer some incentive to improve for some people. Online ratings give some information about one's advancement even if better measures might [or might not] be available. Bob D.
