A very knowledgeable user of ChessBase programs contacted me and pointed out that there actually _is_ some coverage of how to enter your moves keyboard-only in the manual. So Fritz&friends are expected to be able to deal fine with keyboard-only input. In the German manual the coverage is minimal and also faulty (this is for the manual version I got with Shredder 8) The English version is more thorough though. Unfortunately the design, at least as explained in the helpfile (see below), doesn't seem to fix the problem Bob mentions, and IMHO even can't do in principle, but maybe (probably) I am simply missing something here, and one of you can work out how it can be done. How to play dxc6 in this position using keyboard only in Fritz&friends? Peter [D]r1bqkbnr/1ppp1ppp/p1B5/4p3/4P3/5N2/PPPP1PPP/RNBQK2R b KQkq - 0 1 Excerpt from English manual: "Entering moves on the keyboard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Because of the beautiful graphical interface of the program, you will probably want to enter moves using the mouse. There is, however, an interesting alternative. You can type in moves on the keyboard, a facility some experienced chessplayers might prefer. When you enter moves on the keyboard, the program will interpret the move as soon as enough information is available to make it unambiguous. Type in the piece (including “p” for pawn) and the destination square, possibly with a capture sign. The order is not critical, so you can type 'nf3', 'f3n', '3nf' etc. You can also use capital letters for the pieces, which however is obviously inconvenient and unnecessary. For the bishop, however, you have to use l, because b is required for the square co-ordinates. “L” stands for the German word for Bishop, which is “Laeufer”. Often the move is executed after two or even one keypress. For instance, in the initial position 'nf' will move the knight from g1 to f3, since that is the only knight that can move to the f-file. If you have only one legal move with your king, typing 'k' is sufficient. Here is a full example of entering the white moves in the sequence 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 5.d4 exd4 6.Qxd4 Qxd4 7.Nxd4 Nf6 8.0-0 Move Keyboard input 1.e2-e4 pe4, ep4, e4, 4e 2.Nf3 nf, fn (since only the knight can move there) 3.Bf1-b5 lb, b5, l5 (only the bishop can move to the 5th rank)* 4.Bxc6 lxc, lxn, lc6, c6 (only the bishop can move there)* 5. d4 Pd4, d4p, 4pd, 4dp 6.Qxd4 qx, q4, d4q, etc. 7.Nxd4 nd4, nx (“knight takes”) 8.0-0 kg, g1k, gk (“king to g-file”) "
