THE FRITZ-WINBOARD-REPORT IIIa 12-13-1998

One of the most interesting new functions of the Fritz5.32-GUI is the support of
winboard-engines. That means, that every winboard engine should work with fritz.
On principle - lets have a look how it works in practice. The testet version is
still the latest beta - like our first tests results.

Used Winboard-beta engine: 12-11-98 , 21504 KB
Fritz5.32 Service-Pack1

A discription how to use the winboard-engine you will find on
www.chessbase.com.
A lot of winboard engines and informations you will find on
www.cent.co.yu/chess

We checked mainly the following functions
1. Human-Engine-Play
2. Analyse-Mode
3. Engine-Engine-Play
4. Tournament-Play
5. Testsuite solving
6. Infodisplay

The winboard-engines we have tried so far are :
The Crazy Bishop, GNUCHESS, Crafty (WB), Tristram, SSECHESS II, Little Goliath,
IamChop, Phalanx, Fortress, Olithink, Arasan, Gromet, Comet (WB), Cilian,
Zchess, NewRival and ANT.
(download adresses below - not checked!)

All winboard-engines:
no display of the just calculated move (variants)

THE FOLLOWING ENGINES ARE WORKING FINE

1. CRAFTY16.01 winboard
by R. Hyatt
ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt

"CommandLine = stop log" stops the increasing number of log files in the
crafty-directory
btw: in blitzgames 16.01 performs better than 15.18, but still cant perform with
the professionals.
A first look shows no speed-differences between the Crafty16_1-Engines for
winboard and Chessbase
(eng-format like fritz, nimzo,...).

2. THE CRAZY BISHOP 0042
Author Rémi Coulom
www-leibnitz.imag.fr/~coulom

No number of nodes
First results (Blitz 5m/K6-II300/Nunn-Games):
Crafty 16.1	3-6
Comet A97:	11,5:8,5

3. LITTLE GOLIATH 1.33 CORRECTION !!!
by Michael Borgstädt,
http://www.cent.co.yu/chess

Playing works, but still no analysing and testsuite solving possible.
Produces Log-files with 0 KByte (LOG is OFF)
It seems that LG belongs to the top-group of the new WB-Fritz-Engines!

Michael at www.cent.co.yu/chess: LG supports Fritz mate values now. Hashtables
are cleared between moves (Fritz sends "new" after each move). This drops
performance significantly. I try to avoid clearing the tables by checking for
the "fritz" command and avoiding clearing the hashtables between moves. As LG
dont know if "new" starts a new game or initiates only the next move, the
hashtables are always filled with informations. - LG accepts the new command
"ponder <move>" now. However, it seems that this command is never send by Fritz.
But if this option is activated, Fritz shows some strange behavior (e.g.
receiving moves like Xxg1xf3 which are never send by LG. A bug report was send
to Chessbase. I recommend not to use this option with the above version of
Winboard.eng. However, the older version dated 30.11.98 does not support some of
the new features, but pondering works well. Log-file can be deactivated now (see
GOLIATH.INI file). I recommend this when using LG with Fritz 5.32.

Some first results (5m/7m/Game; K6-2-300):
LG-Crafty16.01	2,5:4,5
LG-Comet A97 1:3
LG- Crazy B42 3,5:05
Fritz5.16 0,5 :2,5

4. GNUCHESS (1996)
www.chessbase.com

5. SEECHESSII 2.01
by S. Slutzky
http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/slutzksn/chess.html

6. GROMET 2.0b
by Frank Schneider
http://home.t-online.de/home/hobblefrank

7. TRISTRAM 4.1.2.
James F. Long
http://home.fda.net/~wzrdking

First 5m-blitz-result: 0,5:5,5 against SSEChess (K6-300)
Seems to be nice competitor for humans and blitzgames...

8. CILIAN 4.07
www.cent.co.yu/chess

It displays only the first move of the main line,
but the Nodes/s and time per s!

ENGINES WITH LIMITATIONS

9. PHALANX XIX
Copyright (c) 1997, 1998 Dusan Dobes
- ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/games/strategy/
- ftp://ftp.math.muni.cz/pub/math/people/Dobes/

Everything works fine, if you would like to play against it with 10 to 40s
Per move becauce Phalanx doesn´t accept fritz-timesettings.
I tried different time-parameters in the command line of the init-file but
without success.
May be somebody knows working entries for fritz...
(CommandLine = -c+)

10. COMET A96 winboard
by U. Tuerke, http://www.gambitsoft.com

needs a few seconds before starting/displaying infos
doesn´t cares about the blitz time

take the comet-A97 Engine - there are no problems!

10. OLITHINK 2.2.1
(c) 1998 Oliver Brausch,
http://www.phy.uni-bayreuth.de/~btp434/

It works, but still moves in two seconds. It seems that there are no time
settings.
Testsuite: no display. Analysis works now, but only a few seconds per move

11. ZCHESS
by Fank Zibi
http://www.worldnet.net/~fzibi/zchess.htm

It works, but always moves in a second
No additional infos (writes often -0.01 in notation)
No permanent brain

12.ARASAN

It works (again), but it always moves in a second, it seems that there is no
time control??!
Analysis and eng-eng ok, Testsuites no.

No unloading st.

13. PHALANX XIX
Copyright (c) 1997, 1998 Dusan Dobes

- ftp://ftp.math.muni.cz/pub/math/people/Dobes/

Everything works fine, if you would like to play against it with 10 to 40s
Per move becauce Phalanx doesn´t allows timesettings in fritz.
I tried different time-parameters in command line of the init-file but without
success.
May be somebody knows working entries for fritz...
(CommandLine = -c+)

ENGINES WITH PROBLEMS USING FRITZ

14. FORTRESS 14b
www.cent.co.yu/chess

It always starts playing after the first time you aktivate the engine. Sometimes
longer,
st. only a few moves?! There seems to be still a problem with the time
allocation.
It doesn´t response on "move now". And it doesn´t like some time-settings.
May be it is only a questions of the the correct entries for the
command-line....

Unloading takes a few minutes when you wish to leave it.

15. ANT

st. he starts calculating for a few seconds,
st. he displays illegal move

I still do not manage to get it work - does somebody knows the correct entries
for the command-line with fritz??

16/17. IAMCHOP6.9 and NEW RIVAL

I still do not manage to get them work - does somebody knows the correct entries
for the command-line with fritz??

SUMMARY

Together with 5 Fritz-Engines (5.16, 5.32, 4.01, 3.01, 1.2), 2 Junior, one
Hiarcs- and Nimzo-Engine we have
so far 19 Engines (minimum!) for our Fritz-Engine-League, not counting several
amateur-engine-version (crafty 16.01, 15.20, 15.19,15.18, 14.12, Exchess
2.45/46/51, etc.). Fritz32 works very fine with the following amateur-engines:

1. Crafty wb / CB-Eng
2. The Crazy Bishop 0042
3. Comet A96/97
4. Little Goliath 1.33
may be so far the strongest wb-engines for fritz

5. GNUCHESS
6. Exchess 2.46/2.51 (CB-Engines)
7. SSECHESSII 2.01
8. Gromit 2.0b
9. Tristram 4.1.2
10. Cilian

Programmers who would like to discuss details and problems should email to
chessbase (see website).
If you found mistakes here, if you have new tips, ideas or tricks how to get
some engines run please feel free to send me an email. Thank you for your
support so far...
