I cannot speak for Canada nor for most of the USA but my perception from my own
vantage point is that children usually learn the basics of chess at an early
age. A fairly large percentage of the grammar schools [ages 6 to about 12] have
chess clubs which meet during lunchtime or after school. Chess 101 would be a
total waste of time for these kids by the time they reach high school [ages
14-18]. Many of them could probably teach Chess 101 by that time.

Computers, software, and the Internet are also being introduced to the children
here at an early age. Many of those who play chess will have played with chess
software and played chess on the Internet before leaving grammar school. One of
my granddaughters is living proof of that, and I had nothing to do with it.

That is my perception. [The World is changing faster than we are!!!]
