here are the stats that i keep. from a game i just played:
(please keep in mind that i'm new at this myself)

NodesSearched: 	5050000
SecondsSearching: 	302.6
NodesPerSecond: 	16,687 --yes my engine IS written in vb.net you ask
--these should be easy to understand

TransTableSize: 	126078
PawnTableSize: 	6739
--in number of positions stored


Trans Return: 	20.1% --percentage of nodes that don't do any searching just
return a value based on trans table
Eval Rate: 	66.3% --percentage of nodes where i call qsearch
NullCutoff nodes:	1.508% -- % that causes null cutoff
Beta Nodes:	10.9% --where it caused beta cutoff
Alpha Nodes:	2.0% -- where it evaled all nodes and none reached alpha
PV Nodes:	0.7%

--when found beta cutoff, what % were on 1st move searched
BetaCutoffOn1st:	74.92%

i keep a few others, but you should get the idea from this
