Ah, I see.  We were discussing the high-level problem of big discontinuities in
the score
returned by the evaluation function.  I never worry about low-level
optimization.  My engine
is still very weak, and I can achieve progress much more easily by concentrating
my work
on other things than raw speed.

But still, you trick is useful, and it is not impossible that I will try to do
something similar
some day.  Thanks for mentioning it.  :-)
