Complex software, as in detecting fortresses and trapped pieces?

Yeah I see what you mean, if I replace those five lines of assembler
with C inlines I get a wopping speed penalty of 3%.

Loops are also dead slow btw, so bitboards catch up in other areas.
Considering the grand total it's not an easy comparison to make.
