I'm not so sure about that.  There is one simple way to exploit the 32
pieces<->32 bits
idea which seems to be at least as popular as bitboards:  Having an array of
32-bit
integers, indexed by the squares of the board, where the bits in each entry
identifies
the pieces which attack the square.
