Subject: What program can find the correct plan for this endgame ?

Author: Jorge Pichard

Date: 13:26:20 04/11/04

From the Book Capablanca's Best Chess Endings Page 270.

How many programs can find the right move 42. Rg3-g2, with the idea to transfer
the Rook to the h-file to protect the Pawn, there by releasing the Queen that is
now tied down to its defense.

New game,
[D]8/pp4rk/2p1p1pq/3pP1Rr/1P1P1PQP/P5RK/8/8 w - - 0 1

Analysis by Shredder 8:

1. ± (0.99): 1.Rg1 Kh8 2.Rg2 Qh7 3.a4 Rxg5 4.Qxg5 Qg8 5.Qd8 Qxd8 6.Kg3
2. ± (1.06): 1.a4 Kh8 2.Qxe6 Rxh4+ 3.Kg2 Rh2+ 4.Kf3 Ra2 5.Qc8+ Kh7 6.Rh3 Ra3+
7.Kg2 Rxh3 8.Qxh3 Qxh3+ 9.Kxh3 Kg8 10.e6 Kf8 11.Kg3 a6
3. ± (1.06): 1.Rg2 Kh8 2.Rg1 Kh7 3.Rg3 Kh8 4.Rg2 Qh7 5.Kg3 Qg8 6.Kf2 Rxg5 7.Qxg5
Kh7 8.Ke2 Qf7 9.h5 gxh5 10.Ke3 Rxg5

(Pichard, MyTown 11.04.2004)

Here Shredder 8 only found the first move 1.Rg2 but failed to follow with the
correct following moves. According to the actual game between Capablanca versus
Eliskases Moscow 1936.

These were the actual moves: 42.Rg3-g2 Kh7-h8 43.Kh3-g3 Kh8-h7 44. Rg2-h2
now there is a threat of taking the e-Pawn-which Black promptly wards off with
44....Rg7e7 45. Rh2-h3 Kh7-g7
