Some sort of HP quirk in the data statements is preventing me from compiling.

e.g.:
chess.f:76:
         DATA ZERO /0J/,WHITE/'WHITE'/,BLACK/'BLACK'/,BELL/%""J/
                     ^
Too few initial values in list of initializers for `zero' at (^)

Also, there is a strange format for some parameters.  I think maybe that the $
indicates a data type (like long verses short integer or something):

chess.f:176:
         CALL MATCH($6300)
                    ^
Invalid form for CALL statement at (^)
