What about another suggestion? :-) If everything else runs fine, I belive you may have a problem with videocard. At least if the problems occur when the chess board are shown in 3D mode and you start a new game. (Even if MS Flight Sim is working fine.) Perhaps you could try to borrow another videocard, or try to borrow some other newer game that uses the graphics card a lot and see if the problem occurs there as well. I hope this was of some help. (But I'm not so sure of it.....)
