Go up one level in this thread
James, I personally think it is worth it. A couple of points: 1) Yes I think it's good to support the author as you pointed out. He's one of only a small band of professional chess programmers and while I also like to encourage amateurs, I also want there to be enough money in this sport for some people to devote 100% of their energies to taking us to the next level. 2) I was dissappointed when the Shredder GUI was absorbed into ChessBase. I like ChessBase products but realistically there was no future for the Shredder GUI inside of ChessBase. I could not see the day that they would promote the GUI alongside that of Fritz. So I was delighted to see that SMK had clearly managed to negotiate selling the GUI separately - this means it has a future. 3) While there are loads of good engines I don't believe there are enough good GUIs. This is just a personal opinion but I appreciate the additional competition. IMHO there are only 4 good GUIs - Fritz, ChessPartner, Arena and now Shredder - (Winboard is OK but not polished IMO) 3) I don't agree that since the Shredder GUI was bundled with version 6 and 7 it therefore *must* be bundled with all future versions. This is the perogative of SMK and ChessBase. If you think Shredder 8 is of less value without the GUI then don't buy it - it's that simple. Just my 2 cents! Regards, Steve
