He drew all his games except with Shredder 6, he squeezed it to death. Shredder wasn't any weaker than the rest, it was important with White to get the win, and stay 1 point ahead. Shredder 8 is stronger, but remeber, Smirin is 2700, not 2800. Kramnik or Kasparov didn't have to win, I think they wanted to win but not badly enough. Those dull draws had winning potential, but were never pressed home for the point with all the might Kramnik or Kasparov had. Kramnik wanted to be fancy and it cost him the win with a deep but unsound N sac on f7, when the simple Bd5! would have made Fritz bleed. Kasparov had a win against Junior with Rxc3,(after blowing 2 wins) but when everyone was saying go Kasparov, he turned around and requested a draw, it was the last game and he had Black, he played it safe. Kramnik did the same by offering draws in his last 2 games, he played it safe after trying to work a miracle, that blew up in his face. In fact these matches were not dull at all, but for us disappointing. Even more so when Kramnik and Kasparov clearly stood better. That, coupled with some unusual errors on their part left the matches drawn. Remove the stupid errors and everyone would say, "Look, these programs are no match for these men!" Clearly, if you want someone to win, you must pick very strong, hungry players, with no reservations, and give them real incentive to win, not draw. Terry
