I don't know enough about the compression performance to know whether
'uncompressed' 16-bit entries result in 2x the size of EGT when compressed.

However, fewer EGTs would require 16-bit entries if the DTZ metric were used
instead of DTM(ate).

DTZ = Depth to (move-count zeroing) move

Actually, I'm thinking of changing the metric name to ...
DTI = Depth to Irreversible move
as this applies to other games like checkers (which has no move-count).

In the same vein, 'DTM' should be changed to 'DTW(in)' as this is again more
portable across game domains.
