I'll give you a real answer from a strong OTB grandmaster that I thought was pretty interesting: "Oh, btw - do some of you play correspondence chess? I'll give you a secret and useful tip that will score many extra points. Use Shredder for tactics - as nearly everbody uses Fritz. And Shredder is simply way faster and stronger when it is about tactics. The Fritz programmers have tried to introduce some additional positional knowledge recently, but when it is about strategy you'll obviously don't want to use any engine at all of course - you all know more about it anyway." I think I have caught the spirit of the message though this is not a real quote. And the GM was well aware that he was talking to pretty ordinary players. This doesn't mean I agree with this statement, but I definitely thought it was interesting - and he was at also an experienced correspondence player himself. I definitely agree that Fritz is the most commonly used engine in correspondence play though. Peter
