I'll give you a real answer from a strong OTB grandmaster that I thought was
pretty interesting:

"Oh, btw - do some of you play correspondence chess? I'll give you a secret and
useful tip that will score many extra points. Use Shredder for tactics - as
nearly everbody uses Fritz. And Shredder is simply way faster and stronger when
it is about tactics. The Fritz programmers have tried to introduce some
additional positional knowledge recently, but when it is about strategy you'll
obviously don't want to use any engine at all of course - you all know more
about it anyway."

I think I have caught the spirit of the message though this is not a real quote.
And the GM was well aware that he was talking to pretty ordinary players. This
doesn't mean I agree with this statement, but I definitely thought it was
interesting - and he was at also an experienced correspondence player himself.

I definitely agree that Fritz is the most commonly used engine in correspondence
play though.
