Two suggestions: reduce beta one higher (beta = min(ht_score+1, beta)), than the upper-bound entry suggests. Because, even when the score is an upper bound, it may still be exact. And when you now with the new adjusted window, that exact score would be out of bounds. This would happen more often with fail soft, than with fail hard I think. You could also try, to update you PV even in the event of a fail low node (with the move that returned the best score by the recursive fail soft search). You might also want to store this move in the HT (and perhaps be careful, when using it for move ordering, it won't be that good as a lower bound move). Regards, Dieter
