Subject: Two Endgame Test Positions

Author: Dieter Buerssner

Both from ICC games Yace-Amateur.

[D] 8/8/4kp2/2B5/p1pP1P1p/5b2/1P1K2P1/8 w - - 0 48 bm d5+;

Black just made the (to me) surprising move Bxf3!?. If White takes the B, he
will lose, because he cannot avoid the promotion of the h-pawn anymore. (Finding
Bxf3 might also be considered as an interesting test position, but it is not
enough to win).
[Will, what I told you about the position was rather wrong ...]

From another game:

[D] 3b4/3B4/4n3/5kp1/8/6P1/6K1/8 b - - 21 69 am g4;

After g4, white has a draw - the black King cannot do anything sensible anymore,
because he has to defend the pinned knight. Ke5 (and probably other moves, too)
is winning. If your engine avoids g4 soon, it might still be interesting to
compare the scores after g4 and Ke5. Can any engine show something close to draw
score after g4?.

Regards,
Dieter
