That's not the way computers always work. They first have to play the correct
move. Then they have to play the correct follow-up. Then they have to play the
correct follow-up to that. Etc.
This is not so much tactics as it is evaluation in this particular position...
Different evaluation terms will change the PV. But perhaps not any of the moves
in the actual game.
I tested here and, at least to Crafty, Bxd4 and fxg6 end up with an almost
identical score, although in a real game, crafty actually plays fxg6 after the
first two moves are played OTB.

As I said, this is about evaluation and not tactics. Perhaps it isn't the best
move. Or perhaps Shredder's evaluation doesn't like the result... Crafty's
score is near zero for this... Particularly if you walk the game down to move 3
and let it search...
