Reading this it seems like playing comp-comp games are a main thing. I can't
imagine you could get more that one or two days salary from this.
If a 'normal' user should buy the engine/gui you need an interface that nice
enough plus ability to scale down the strength so they can beat it sometimes. At
the full strength it is only needed as an analysis tool. I'm sure since you are
a chessplayer that you use some kind of database tool to analyze your own game.
To be able to plug the engine into such a database tool it is important that
this possibility exists. No matter how much analysis feature you add to your
gui, people will still use CA etc. for their analysis job. An engine is only a
secondary input for hints of moves. The main input will always be your own
imagination plus games and books.

Rebel - Run nice in DB tolls
Gandalf - Run nice in DB tools (*)
Shredder - Run nice in DB tools
ChessMaster - Run with some trouble in DB tools (collecting of obk after each
reboot)
Sjeng - Run nice in DB tools (*)

*) Not tested by me

Some other engines can be run in spesific DB-tools like Fritz, Junior, and
Tiger(2).

So without a very good gui for playing (like Chessmaster) you will be put down
to the bottom of the list for any serious player too when their go on shoping
for a new Chessprogram.

With WB/Uci support you add both CC people and DB users to the list of potential
buyers.

Of course the main thing for selling Chessprogram is to advertice it and make it
easy available.
