I have three different early versions of Colossus: for the Commodore, CPC
Amstrad and ZX Spectrum, plus White Knight for the BBC Acorn. The Commodore
version (running on a 6502C CPU at 1Mhz!) was the fastest, while the Amstrad
Colossus edition was rather slow and disappointing. It was the first program
that I tried to play real blitz against and kept score for a while until I was
able to beat it really badly. But at that time I was sure it was rated about
1800. In the booklet I have the scores of matches Colossus won against other
programs, such as Mychess, Sargon, etc. Colossus had a superb box that the
program was shipped in: with a beautiful picture of a Knight and the caption
said something like "the best chess program available on any home computer..."
(CDS Software); the chess graphics were cool, just like newspaper chess
diagrams, and the commands intuitive. It had a great mate-solver too (did
self-mates as well). Would be great if we really had a new PC version :-)
