Suppose you and I reach and ending that is won for you in 270 moves.  But you
don't know how to do it.  Why do I have to play on for 270 moves to prove that
and then get the draw?

That was why the original exceptions to the 50 move rule were rescinded by FIDE.

The idea makes perfect sense.  You already get to make me play for 50 moves if
you don't know how to win a KQ vs KR ending.  Why make it 150 for a knn vs kp
that you don't understand, when there are additional rounds that have to be
paired and this game is holding things up.  And/or wearing out the players
involved...
