Mac OS X isn't using the usual monolitic kernel as most BSD systems use. It is instead using Mach 3.0 microkernel. The BSD part is the rest of the system. Much like in Linux where Linux is the kernel and GNU applications is the system. So while BSD knowledge is a boon it doesn't adress the kernel and its services until it connects with the BSD API.
