If you study this for a while, there are key positions where the king and queen cut off critical squares from the king and rook. Probably what happens is that while the queen can control an entire rank or file, it can't occupy the critical square to limit the king and prevent the rook from getting behind its own king and checking there. IE the queen always threatens to check-check-check-capture the rook if it gets on a bad square. Apparently with 16 x 16 squares, the queen can't cover all the key squares to prevent the rook from delivering checks from the rear...
