3: San Lorenzo: He was one of the most revered Saints in the Christian
Antiquity and the Middle Ages: the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Rome is the third
most important one after the Basilica of San Pedro and the San Paul's Basilicas.
It has the privilege of the Pope's altar where only he can celebrate.
4: San Lorenzo was a deacon of the Roman Church, martyred on the persecution of
the Emperor Valerian, who ordered through decrees to shut down and to arrest all
the worship places and Christian cemeteries, punishing the leaders through exile
and death penalty.
5: By a letter of a former Pope, the Pope Cornelio, we know that the Catholic
Church assisted in the third century, in Rome, more than 1500 poor people.
6: On the Valerian's persecution the Pope Sist II (257-258) was arrested and
martyred with four deacons, while he was celebrating the Eucharist Liturgy at
the San Calixtus' Cemetery on August 6th, 258. The Rome's mayor captured Lorenzo
and demanded him to give all the Catholic wealth in three days.
7: Lorenzo gave the Church's goods to the poor people, the real Church's
wealth, according to him. Tha mayor gave orders for Lorenzo to be cruelly hurt
and also, by others ways tormented. Finally Lorenzo was naked and put on a huge
grill, which was red-hot.
8: After suffering for certain times those terrible things, Lorenzo smiled and
said to the judge: "If you want, you can turn me over, because I've already got
grilled on this side". Lorenzo continued to pray for the good of the Church and
for the peace of the world.
9: He died calm and confident: There was August 10th, 258. His body, totally
burnt, was taken in triumph to the Christian Veran's Cemetery, where was
inhumed. Some years later, the Emperor Constatine built in the same place the
famous Basilica of San Lorenzo.
10: Many others Churches in Rome were built in honour of the great martyr, whose
name was introduced into the Canon of the Holy Mass, a privilege reserved for
very few Saints. I ask all the Catholic people that are watching when I am
