My advice is: first you need to think about if you want to improve and get good at chess or if you want something to play seldom; I mean once a month or so. If you want "a toy" that can help you to improve your skill, do not buy cheap computers, but a relatively strong one; 2400 Elo (USCF). There are many ways to weaken a chess program, but the only way to have a stronger one is to buy another one... However in order to learn you need to read chess books and study the openings as well as the endgames. I can suggest you either a PDA with Pocket Fritz 2 or Chess Tiger. I think they are strong enough for a std. player. Remember that the stronger is your opponent the more reliable are its evaluations and moves! I started to buy "chess playing toys" in 1978 and have owned very many and I was never satisfied = I changed them all the time... to be honest I am not satisfied yet...maybe because I do not own "something" that play 3000 Elo or more!:-) Chess is a fantastic game and the better you play the more fun it gets!
