Beyond the first few plies, a pv is a wild guess. Beyond the stated search depth, a pv is wild speculation (often based on SEE). It is not unusual to see a pv by a top chess program have a checkmate sign in it, and have the score nowhere close to a checkmate. Consider these trajectories, the analyzed ce estimate, and the termination of the pv: [D]r2q1rk1/p2bppbp/3p1np1/1p6/3BP2P/1BN2P2/PPPQ2P1/R3K2R b KQ - acd 12; ce 2; pv a5 h5 Nxh5 Bxg7 Kxg7 g4 Nf6 Qh6+ Kh8 Nd5 a4 Nxf6 axb3 Nxd7 Qxd7 Qxh7#; pm a5; id "C.A.P. 693585"; [D]r3nrk1/1bqnbppp/p3p3/1p2p3/3N1P2/2N1BBQ1/PPP3PP/3R1RK1 w - - acd 13; ce 17; pv Bxb7 Qxb7 fxe5 b4 Nce2 Rd8 Bg5 Bxg5 Qxg5 Nc7 Qe7 Nxe5 Nxe6 Rxd1 Qxf8#; pm Bxb7; id "C.A.P. 969232";
