You could try (1) Rebel (probably won't work under WinXP) Is a commercial program, but a strong free version is available. (2) Slowchess (3) Arasan (4) Arena (2), (3) are not as strong as REBEL, but still quite strong. There is one more program called scid. It is a chess database, but comes with its own strong engine called scidlet. Its about 3MB (Not sure). Others (mentioned above) should be smaller. Arena is not really a chess program, but an interface to chess programs. However, arena comes with several free strong chess programs (stronger that (2) & (3), but not stronger that (1)). And you can use any winboard or UCI compatible engines with arena. Size about 3MB. Hth, Pallav Nawani
