It is a "hold-over" from early table applications.  Such a position is not
possible.  IE say king vs king with both kings on the same square.  The
so-called "Godel number" is basically two 6-bit values combined into one 12 bit
number.  Doing so means every possible square on the board with every possible
square on the board, giving positions where two (or more) pieces occupy the same
square.  Etc..

I'm not sure there is such a thing, although there might be.  DTM = Distance to
Mate.  IE raw absolute number of moves required to force checkmate, even if it
might violate the 50-move rule and end in a draw.  DTC = Distance to Conversion,
which is the distance to the next capture or promotion into a different table,
but that starts the 50-move counter over.  I'm not sure that all DTC efforts
reset the 50-move counter on pawn pushes, leaving a hole if they don't.
