DTM = distance to mate
DTC = distance to mate, capture, or pawn _promotion_
DTZ = distance to mate, capture, or pawn _move_

Therefore:
DTM >= DTC >= DTZ

There are other metrics to guarantee optimal play when the 50-move rule is
enforced (DTZ is not enough for this purpose), but the details would lead a bit
far afield here...
