yes, just install winXP on the new disk, then plug the old one in alongside.
then copy all your data from the old disk, and throw it away. it will not do you
any good any more.

i've had 2 dying HDs up to now, one was in a computer i used to generate the 8pc
checkers database, and, once generated, to use it to search with that database.
that harddisk was basically constantly used, for a couple of months, then got
some faults (corrupt files etc).
the second HD that died was in an IBM laptop of mine which was 4 years old, and
was only used very moderately.

a friend of mine used to work at IBM harddisk manufacturing, he told me that HDs
are getting progressively more fragile as the data density has skyrocketed over
the last years. apparently, the manufacturers want to stop giving 2-year
warranties and switch to a 1-year warranty. then there are some more expensive
disks they sell for servers, which still get longer warranties. so basically,
harddisks today are less reliable than they used to be, which is the price you
pay for having lots of storage for little money.
