The USA is not like Euorope.  In the USA, professors must work for a living.
If you don't work, you don't eat.

That's stupid.  $2000-$3000 to attend a tournament that could have been
arranged to attend for free, like CCT?

$500 does not cover 1/4 of the cost.  Therefore it's not free.
