This is something we hear a lot from the supporters of the WCCC. Someone suggests it be run via the internet so that everyone can participate for near zero cost, and the counter-point is, "It is more fun if we have an in-person event." That really isn't a counter-point, nor a reason why it should be named the WCCC. When I think about it more, it is really another reason why it shouldn't be called the WCCC. I know of no other serious world championship where the format is decided upon based upon how much fun it will be for the participants. There may be other good reasons why this is the world championship of computer chess, but "fun" shouldn't be one of them. If all other things are equal, and you have a choice between less fun and more fun, then choose more fun. If your choice is between: 1. Less fun, but 60-70 participants 2. More fun, but only 16 participants Choose 1.
