I omitted one important step - you need to connect to the right server, which
has been posted a few times, but I will repeat it:

us.austnet.org 8888 is the server

you may need to add it to the server list which should be the first window to
pop up when you run mIRC, I am not sure if it is in their default server list in
the current version - I have a slightly older version and had to add it myself.
