Definitely getting off on the wrong foot with that.

If your local library has a copy of this book, look at Chapter 3:

It is the best dialog on optimization that I know of.

This is also too low level for the most part, but well worth reading anyway:

Optimization should be done at the algorithm level.
Profiles should always come before optimizations.
