If you want a simple solution I would recommend using true type fonts.
Simply download the font from
  http://www.hsv.tis.net/chess/graphics/font.htm
place it into your font drawer and from now on displaying the chess board
comes down to printing an ASCII-string.
There are other advantages as well, like
full scalability,
perfect printer output,
chess informant symbols as extra characters
