Well, the 1980 progarm Paradise by David Wilkins also has a pattern matching subsystem. So, Symbolic is the second chess progarm and not the first with this feature. However, Symbolic is different from Paradise in many ways (see my LJ entries at http://www.livejournal.com/users/chessnotation/ for more details), with perhaps the most important distinction being that Symbolic is intended to be a competitive program and so includes more than a demonstartion of tactical planning.
