I believe you've stated that it can crank-out a legal game of chess. As lame a game as that might be at this early stage, it would be a super idea if you could get a chess server interface going at some early point. There are lots of weaker players that enjoy sparring with engines. This will make it easy to track it's progress, and for us as ICC/FICS spectators and participants to "share and enjoy" your project. If the baby has been born, then you should not hide him from the neighbors. :) It should not be hard to scrape up a trailing edge linux platform to serve this purpose. I'm continually running across old 333/500/600 mhz machines that are headed for the boneyard. If not, a volunteer beta tester might be willing to help. Just a suggestion from a "fan". :)
