Anybody that has downloaded my >book.bin from the last year can verify that whatever he offers as evidence is >just nonsense... When everythings fails - blame the "killer" book. Bob. I have used the same book.bin for the last 3 years and I never ever attempted to tune it. It always amazes me when a program loses to Crafty on my machine - the first counter point words about why the results are distorted and program A played poorly. "Program "A" does not play well at that time control." It is usally a 40/xx or some time control with increment. I hear it all the time. Bad time management is part part of the program - just like any other bugs that may pop up (can we say 3 fold repetition). Second most common "blame game" phrase - "Program A's book is not tuned" -- well, neither is Crafty when it runs on my machine. But book tuning has been around for years and for better or worse - it is part of the chess program. Both of these statements are "victim" statements - they are blaming others for things that they can control about their programs. If your program does not play well at xx/yy tc - fix it. If you have a crummy book - fix it. I do happen to think (btw) Shredder ( in tournament mode using Shreddder Classic GUI ) is well suited for the engine. Hiarcs tournament book is also very good. The Lokasoft books that come with Tiger and Rebel are also very high quality for computer play. The standard Fritz GUI book that comes with many of the Chessbase engines (Tiger etc) is not as high quality for computer matches ( fine for human play).
