I've never been a fan of the P4, but that all changed for me with HT. A P4 HT handles multitasking so incredibly well that I consider it a huge benefit for general use. For a machine you want to use as a dedicated chess box - then perhaps that is a different story. In that situation you could just turn HT off in the BIOS before you install Windows. But if you're going to do that you may as well buy an AMD64 instead....
