If you can connect to the Playchess server as a guest (i.e. without registering
with a serial number) you don't need to disable your firewall or your virus
scanner. You either have a connection, or haven't. But you can't register being
logged in as a guest. You have to register first. Look below.

A Windows "search file" command (start > search) gives you a list of files
matching your search criteria, it doesn't open a file. This doesn't make sense.

This is most probably the autorun startup menu, not the content of the CD Rom.
Use windows explorer to view the contents of the CD Rom.

In what directory is your copy of Fritz installed? In what directory do you
locate the executable? You state it isn't c:\program files\viva media. Which is
it?

Steve Lopez'help files and older T-notes help people with features of the
program. If a problem occurs often, and isn't user specific, there might be an
occasional opportunity to describe it and give a solution.
It's hard to expect a column about every user specific porblem.

To summarize: you can connect to the Playchess.com site. You can look around as
a guest, even play, or chat or whatever, but as soon as you enter the
registration code which was provided with your copy of Fritz 8.

I hope this is all correct.

Is it clear you can't register while logged in as a guest? In that case there
would be thousands of members with the registered nickname "guest" :)

In other words did you create a new account? I.e. did you chose a nickname and
a password, after which you logged in with that and _then_ entered your serial
number?

If that doesn't work, there only one possibility left, and that is the serial
number is invalid, and you should ask for a new one.
