The pieces have magnets in them, so you would have to put magnets in any pieces that you wanted to work with the sensors. Since the playing surface is vinyl I don't think that you'll be wanting to upgrade to really fancy pieces. Just whatever you might see in tournament play. Note that the Grandmaster does not come with any extra pieces, and you can't turn rooks upside down to represent queens due to the need for magnets in the bases. I haven't looked into buying extra pieces or modifying standard tournament pieces yet. -Keith
