Thomas informs me that SPChess is the work of NINE programmers who have been working on it for seven years. It has its own interface, but the guys haven't yet managed to figure out how to interface with WinBoard. He said that the nine programmers didn't have big egos, so wished to remain anonymous. Apparently they will be online at 6pm Pacific time on Wednesday when they would answer all my questions. I pointed out to Thomas that SPChess would have a very good chance of being the world champion - surely the authors would be proud of such an achievement? He said that they didn't want to make themselves known. I pointed out that in six or seven years of playing at ICC I have had SIX very similar conversations with people operating very strong programs. I said that in all cases, the operator would claim that it was written by his "buddies", so as to avoid answering simple questions about what techniques the program uses. I suggested to him that his program was Shredder or more likely Junior, but he denied this. He kept up his story about his nine programmer friends. I'm afraid I wasn't too polite to Thomas, but to be fair to him he took my relentless teasing in good part. But he's not a serious person and he's operating a commercial program. All IMHO of course. Andrew
