Another reason is that it's simpler in many cases to write endgame eval. There are quite a lot of well known principles which can be written and tested for in a pretty straight forward manner. It seems to matter the most against engines of equal strength or those only slightly stronger. Probably because many of those games are actually decided in the endgame. If the opponent is a lot stronger then it doesn't help measurably, it is most often too late to improve the game at that stage. >>Currently I am testing both programs at normal chess.
