Should the Xeon really be that high on the list?  Based on my own
experience, I would choose the following ranking:

1) Opteron/AMD64
2) Centrino
3) Athlon
4) G5
5) Xeon
6) Pentium IV
7) G4

Of course, you are right that the ranking depends to a great extent
on the program chosen.  My list is based only on the speed of my own
engine (which is not optimized for any particular platform) on the
different processors.
