It is a sort of horizon effect between classes. Berliner's proposal to reduce this problem was to use more classes, with smooth transitions between them (the interpolation coefficients that are discussed in this thread). My attempt at an explanation is no substitute for serious discussions about the blemish effect. I can only encourage you to look for more accurate descriptions. Fabien.
