Well, what a surpise (* attention sarcasm*),
but let's see what the FIDE has to say on their webpages:

 >>The world chess championships got underway with a very well-organized opening
ceremony ( no problems at all !) which saw H.E. Eng. Mohammed Al Gadhafi, the
President of the Libyan Olympic Committee and also President of the
Mediterranean Chess Association together with the President of FIDE (the world
chess federation) , H.E Kirsan Ilymuzhimnov declaring the start to the
tournament.
....
The opening ceremony was attended by all the players (!! Aha ! All...) as well
as a number of FIDE executive board members (well, the money has to go
somewhere..).

The ceremony started with the presenters welcoming the world’s best players to
Libya (which wouls be Kasparov, Anand, Kramnik, Leko, Ponomariov..he..wait a
second..). This was then followed by the playing of the Libyan national anthem
and the Libyan flag was raised (Damn, I missed that...).

This was shortly followed by a welcome speech by FIDE president Kirsan
Ilyumzhimnov. He thanked the Libyan leader, Moammar Al Gadhafi for his backing
of the event as well as Eng Mohammed Al Gadhafi for his support (which went
straight into Ilyumzhimnov's pockets) and activity within the Mediterranean
Chess Association (yes, they are good people..).

Following this, Libyan Women cadets brought in the 56 flags of the nations
competing for the World Championship finals and they gave a very nice display at
the Mahary theatre (I hope they were all virgins...or the muslim players might
consider to quit the tournament).

...
Chief Arbiter Panagiotis Nikolopoulos proceeded to thank Eng.Mohammed Al Gadhafi
and the Libyan people for their support of this prestigious event.

Eng. Mohammed Al Gadhafi then explained the rationale behind the support for the
tournament (Insult the Jews) and the role that all of us must play in ensuring
responsibility for the way we act (that is very good one :-). By being more
responsible, we would all appreciate that God has created everything for a
purpose (bomb other people etc..) and we should look after everything
(yeah..don't let anybody escape..).
...

Then it was cocktail time
