Opteron 248 (clocked at 2.2 GHz)	  $ 690
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (clocked at 2.2 GHz)  $ 417

about 70% cheaper and the same performance in a single-configuration. Also
Motherboards for the Athlon 64 are much cheaper (you'll save another 100$ for
sure).

That is a valid reasoning and if you plan to go for Dualconfiguration it is a
good idea to do so now.

If there will be faster opteron, there will be faster Athlon too. No difference
here.
